New music this week from Thomston, Noname, J Balvin and Kero Kero Bonito

A lot has happened in musicland since the last edition of New Music Monday. Legendary Daft Punk announced their parting ways, Bruce Springsteen and Obama have launched a podcast together, Lady Gaga’s dogs got kidnapped and Rina Sawayama was the catalyst in the Brit Awards’ and Mercury Prize’s decision to expand their eligibility criteria to celebrate music that is more representative of the UK’s current social fabric. New albums include a great King Gizzard joint (more on that at some point this week) and Chloe X Halle’s Ungodly Hour deluxe (or Chrome Edition) with two pretty stellar additional tracks. Got less than a handful of tracks to go through this week but trust and believe these deserve some attention:

The Princess and the Clock — Kero Kero Bonito

Welcome back to the KKB show! This sprawling number covers all previously visited bases and expands on them with furious electropop production. If you’re already enamored with their sound the first bit will greatly resonate as a nod to their cartoonish trademark early sound. The trio then goes well beyond that with stammering programmed beats and sprinkles of synth left and right. The result is a hybrid video game soundtrack/club banger that reflects potential adhd right back onto the listener. Get into it!

JPA989 — Thomston

From the land down under, JPA989 is a heavily-produced piece of electro synth-pop that simmers pensively to a throbbing bassline and delightful self-harmonization. Perfect for a drive, windows down and licence preferable but not mandatory.

Rainforest — Noname

The bossa nova percussion-led Rainforest is the newest offering from conscious rapper-turned-librarian Noname. It is a gift. Treat it as such.

Ma’ G — J Balvin

J Balvin gets down and dirty on immaculately-produced Ma’ G. The beat is almost skeletal, shifting away from reggaeton to a Travis Scott lean.
