New music this week from Bebe Rexha, Aquilo, Young Franco, Paloma Faith and more

Kicking off the NMM series where I list a couple of my favorite newly released tracks for you hearing / viewing pleasure. With thoughts-on-the-go, hope you enjoy these recommendations from a variety of genres!

Christmas Prayer — Paloma Faith (feat. Gregory Porter)

Coming at the heels of Infinite Things , it’s one of the better iterations of the Christmas song trope. It’s also one of the better Paloma Faith tracks I’ve heard in a while — her new record left me pretty indifferent. There’s something about the chirpy melody, the trademark Paloma tone and Gregory Porter’s rich complementary vocals that make this cheesy number one impossible not to bop along to. I just wish Infinite Things had tapped more into this kind of energy.

Fallin’ Apart — Young Franco, Denzel Curry, Pell

One hell of an exciting crossover. Denzel is making strides left and right but still under the mainstream radar: give the man the attention he deserves dammit! This rap-house-funk number has me hooked from Denzel’s opening verse ’til its last seconds and Pell doesn’t drop the ball. More, I want more!

Baby, I’m Jealous [Remix] — Bebe Rexha (feat. Doja Cat, Natti Natasha)

Pop duchess Bebe Rexha links up with Doja Cat and Natti Natasha for the remix of her Baby, I’m Jealous. Undoubtedly more a cash grab than a statement of sorts — well there actually is a statement in there: mainstream American pop can no longer afford to ignore Latin artists if it wants to reach the global masses. Natti finds a snuggle place to fit her verse in there; it’s sharp, it’s groovy, it’s all I wanted from her and more. Solid pop crossover.

Missing the Mark — Aquilo

A dense indie pop track that does the job just right. It’s the perfect one for a rainy day. It’s ok to cry once in a while right? Of course I know everyday’s a bit much but who are you to judge?

End or Beginning — Hidden Empire

Are your tears dry? Good, this ambient one is the opportunity to re-center the self and remember you control your mind, it doesn’t control you. No doubt a transportive one with a near-EDM subtext if you see what I mean. There’s something very Deadmau5 about the progression and the potential for a remix.
