Lana Del Rey’s seventh album is one more decisive step towards the pantheon of the great singer-songwriters.

A decade into a singular career, Lana Del Rey is uniquely positioned as one of the most influential artists of her generation. In her seventh studio album, she pauses and looks back at the dust settling in the distance. Work on Chemtrails Over The Country Club — initially dubbed White Hot Forever — started before Norman Fucking Rockwell!, its phenomenal predecessor, had even left Polydor’s vaults. It’s Jack Antonoff and Lana’s second collaboration; more intimate, less grandiloquent, still brilliant.

Chemtrails Over The Country…

Sweden met Zara Larsson at a mere ten years old as she sailed through her home country’s version of the ‘Got Talent’ shows. She’s now three-two international-full-length releases from then; at only twenty-three, the artist is one of the youngest old-timers making waves on the global pop stage.

Larsson’s latest, Poster Girl emerges from a whirlpool of enticing singles that launched the Scandinavian popstar into a new era. Some of the most captivating cuts made it onto the record–including 2018’s evergreen dance pop sensation ‘Ruin My Life’, the resuscitated ‘WOW’ and the remarkably slick ‘Love Me Land’.

Two notable absences…

Hello friends and music fiends! My heart burst with joy when I saw the long-awaited Grammy performers announcement on my Twitter feed and saw Beyonce reigning on a long list of other great-but-not-Beyonce artists. Then it sank when I saw a D’Amelio sister in its vicinity. With my expert journalistic cap on, I jumped on my favorite search engine (isn’t there really only one? despite years of telling myself I ought to use Ecosia I honestly just… don’t) and started the fact-checking process. It took less than a minute to debunk the scam of it all. The poor photoshopping of…

Prolific Aussie outfit King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard return with a third and final foray into microtonal tuning after the ingenious Flying Microtonal Banana (2017) and the more recent K.G. (November 2020).

It’s their seventeenth studio album in a decade-long run as well as their eleventh release in a year (including retrospectives and live albums). Recent output suggests it’s been business as usual for King Gizzard: you wouldn’t guess their last two albums were made in isolation and pieced together from afar.

Yet that’s how K.G. and L.W. were conceived; the latter intended as both a standalone record and…

A lot has happened in musicland since the last edition of New Music Monday. Legendary Daft Punk announced their parting ways, Bruce Springsteen and Obama have launched a podcast together, Lady Gaga’s dogs got kidnapped and Rina Sawayama was the catalyst in the Brit Awards’ and Mercury Prize’s decision to expand their eligibility criteria to celebrate music that is more representative of the UK’s current social fabric. New albums include a great King Gizzard joint (more on that at some point this week) and Chloe X Halle’s Ungodly Hour deluxe (or Chrome Edition) with two pretty stellar additional tracks. …

Hand Habits lay bare the process for consolidating their identity in their new EP, dirt. Throughout, they shed light on how they continually assemble and rearrange parts of themselves.

The directions seem simple enough: build, step back, choose the parts to keep and those to discard, implode the latter. Rinse and repeat. Thing is: it takes years of draining experience to make it look that easy.

And Meg Duffy — Hand Habits sole member — is not lacking in the experience department. They picked up a guitar some ten years ago and haven’t set it down since. …

22 Feb. 2.21, 8 am: 10 days since Dua Lipa’s Moonlight release. Still no signs of life on those new tracks. 3 days ago Ariana Grande and HAIM released deluxes too. Ariana’s extra tracks don’t fall far from the positions tree. Is pedestrian the word? We’ll go with pedestrian. The HAIM two additional tracks are awesome, what a record. Wallows also released a deluxe… EP??? Usher in the age of the deluxe ~anything~. It’s only a matter of time before a New Music Monday (Extended Deluxe Reloaded Sunshine Edition). In a ~pandoramic~ no less.

22 Feb. 2.21, 8.30 am: also…

It’s 11:59 pm and you’re refreshing your favorite artist’s streaming pages. Your hands are clammy, your heart is beating fast: is that a panic attack looming on the horizon or is that just a symptom of an incredibly unhealthy relationship you have to someone you have never met? Does it matter? It’s now midnight and you’ve somehow managed to already be halfway through the newly released album.

This might be how some Dua Lipa supporters discovered the expanded (Moonlight) edition of Future Nostalgia. Having listened to the new material from COVID sometime-voice of reason sometime-voice of denial pop superstar Dua…

Ah yes, another week, another batch of bonkers news! Setting apart non-music related news like QAnon elected officials in the US reflecting on a country that constantly swears “we are better than this” yet hasn’t shown any sign of this being true in ages, or the now notorious Jackie Weaver Parish council meeting zoom call in the UK (watch here if you haven’t!), there’s still more headlines coming your way: Marilyn Manson has always been a creep and you should know about it, The Weeknd gave a grand Super Bowl half-time show performance (that left many unimpressed apparently), a country…

Looking back at an artist who turned art into power.

As I revisit last Summer’s HEAV3N SUSPENDED livestream (see below), I am still taken aback by the poignancy of SOPHIE’s set — that doesn’t diminish with subsequent listens. “Everybody’s got to own their body” chants pile on, reminding us of the power and agency within each and every single one of us. The music radiates love and solidarity, especially for our Black trans and queer femme family that is still subject to so much unfathomable violence. Among the fallen, we remember and mourn the lives of: Monika Diamond, Lexi, Nina…
